Stargate Reboot in the Works

A new Stargate film? A reboot, you say? Yep. Looks like we got another space movie coming our way from based on the popular 1994 film Stargate starring Kurt Russell and James Spader.

Evidently, MGM and Warner Bros. want to make a trilogy out of the original movie. They’ve tagged the original team for the project: Roland Emmerich who directed the 1994 film and Dean Devlin who co-wrote the flick along with Emmerich. (Although, the press release listed Devlin as a producer, not writer)

Gary Barber from MGM said, “We couldn’t be more excited to once again partner with Roland and Dean, the world-class creators of the original Stargate, to bring their reinvigorated vision of this wildly popular property to audiences of multiple generations. Stargate is one of the biggest titles in MGM’s vast library, and we look forward to adding this great franchise to our slate.”

Emmerich and Devlin stated “the Stargate universe is one that we missed terribly, and we cannot wait to get going on imagining new adventures and situations for the trilogy. This story is very close to our hearts, and getting the chance to revisit this world is in many ways like a long lost child that has found its way back home.”

No word on whether this will be a complete re-do of the original movie or if they are going to take into consideration the timeline created by the multiple successful television shows Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe.

If they start from the beginning, that will be a bit weird since the canon of Stargate created by the television shows is so ingrained in my head. But, if they choose to go that way, that’s no surprise. Remember J.J. Abrams Star Trek reboot?
